Do You Still Brush in Circles with an Electric Toothbrush?

Posted on 9/1/2025 by Strongsville Center for Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry
Mother and young son smiling while brushing their teeth together with electric toothbrushes. Many of us grew up believing that brushing our teeth in circles was the best way to clean them. However, with the increasing popularity of electric toothbrushes, it's important to reconsider this habit.

While brushing in circles might be effective with a manual toothbrush, it can actually be detrimental when using an electric toothbrush. This is because the rotating or oscillating head of an electric toothbrush does most of the work for you. Brushing in circles with an electric toothbrush can lead to uneven cleaning, missed spots, and even damage to your teeth and gums.

So, how should you brush your teeth with an electric toothbrush? Here are some tips:

Use a soft-bristled brush head. This will help protect your teeth and gums from damage.

Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle to your gum line. This will ensure that the bristles reach the gum line where plaque and bacteria build up.

Move the brush head slowly from tooth to tooth. Let the brush head do the work for you. Don't scrub too hard.

Brush each tooth for about 2 seconds. Make sure to brush the front, back, and chewing surfaces of each tooth.

Don't forget to brush your tongue. This will help remove bacteria and freshen your breath.

Brush for a total of 2 minutes. Set a timer to help you keep track of time.

Rinse your mouth with water after brushing.

By following these tips, you can ensure that you're getting the most out of your electric toothbrush and effectively removing plaque and bacteria.

Additional Benefits of Using an Electric Toothbrush:

•  Removes more plaque and bacteria than a manual toothbrush. Studies have shown that electric toothbrushes are more effective at removing plaque and bacteria than manual toothbrushes.
•  May improve gum health. Electric toothbrushes can help to reduce gingivitis (inflammation of the gums).
•  Can be easier to use for people with limited dexterity. Electric toothbrushes can be easier to use for people with arthritis or other conditions that make it difficult to grip a manual toothbrush.

Talk to Your Dentist:

If you have any questions about how to use your electric toothbrush, be sure to talk to your dentist. They can give you personalized advice and ensure that you're using the right technique.

By using an electric toothbrush properly and practicing good oral hygiene habits, you can keep your teeth and gums healthy for a lifetime.
